What are we up to?

Hey Parents just an update on what we are doing!

In Reading we have started James and The Giant Peach- so that is going well, the kids are probably excited for a book away from our Reading series.

In Math we have started to learn about customary measurement and capacity- They enjoy measuring with paper clips but not so much with rulers and yard sticks.

In Science we are wrapping up the human body and planet studies. I did send home a sheet that has information about their FINAL project this is due April 8th at the start of the day.

Writing has been fun, we are moving into poetry so that will be enjoyable all those rhymes!!

Grammar is everyone favorite! That is totally a joke, but they should have some Grammar Rock songs stuck in their heads so listen for those! I know that the boys especially love those songs :)

So in a nutshell that is it. I am sending home the final Scholastic book order today- that will be due back on April 22nd!!

Human Body Unit

Hey parents!

I just wanted to give you a heads up on the Science unit we are starting...... It is about the Human Body- basic stuff bones, muscle groups, nervous & digestive systems..... if for any reason you do not want your child to learn about this please let me know...... I WILL NOT be covering any material related to reproductive anatomy... We will just be covering basic human properties i.e. names of bones in arms, legs and upper abdomen, main muscle groups and how our nervous-respiratory- circulatory and digestive systems work.

What a fun week!

Just in case you haven't heard this week was Dr. Seuss week at school!

We had quite a fun time! We watched a few clips of Dr. Seuss videos, played games as Seussville.com and celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss with cake and read alouds!

I will have photos posted of the older kids reading to the younger ones and some younger kids reading to the older kids!  It was super cute!

So in Math we are moving into probability- we have gone through money and time with a breeze (your kiddos are sooooo smart!)

In reading we have just finished our 22nd lesson which is very hard to believe! Students have learned about homophones and adjectives!

We have been working on our stamina in writing and are moving into writing lengthy stories or letters that make sense and are cohesive.....

Your children are becoming very well acquainted with the computers at school and we have some impressive typing speeds.

Well that is it for now! Check back for updates!

FYI~ We will be dismissing school at 12:00 on Wednesday and then no school on Thursday for STATE C GIRLS BASKETBALL!!! We are very excited for the girls!!

My apologies!

Hey Parents I am so sincerely sorry that I have completely forgotten to post on here!! It has been pure chaos!

Any who I thought I would update you all on what has been going on and what is coming up!

Math: We have moved out of money and into time! The kids are really doing well with it and I am very impressed!

Reading: We are still working out of our Journey's Reading Program we are wrapping up Unit 3 our of 4 so I am contemplating throwing a few short novels into the mix! I recently found a blog that has inspired me to get all of our Reading materials onto this blog it may not happen until fall but keep an eye out, this will help students be more successful at home!

Writing: We are done writing a class play, the kiddos are very proud of themselves :) however we keep running into delays due to absences and crazy school days! I apologize for this but we are trying to make it happen, I will send home a note so that everyone knows when this will occur.
You may have heard about the writing scribble journals! These are a huge hit and your child will get to bring them home at the end of the year.

Science: We have finished up life science and are heading into Earth science, the kids are excited for this because we will get to do a few fun experiments!! You will notice that they do have to bring home more homework on Wednesdays for this but that is due to time constraints.

Keyboarding/ Computer Skills: It is no secret that having as many computer and keyboarding skills as you can is very beneficial in today's world, therefore we have started using the computer lab. Your child gets 20 minutes of keyboarding (learning to type, increase rate of typing and familiarization with the whole keyboard) Monday- Wednesday. Thursday I allow them to have more of a "fun" day which entails them playing keyboarding games or a educational website where they still need to use components of the computer.

~I am sure you have heard about Teach your monster to read, this is a fabulous (free) program that students have been plugging into and some have even mastered! I try very hard to ensure that the students are enjoying their time in the lab while learning!

Vowac: We are moving right along in Vowac, many of the students are very fluent in this program and breeze through their daily work.

Spelling: We have put our spelling tests onto Spellingcity.com this has been super helpful, however you have probably noticed that your child does not bring home spelling lists every week. This is because we are now doing spelling pretests in class and then each day they are allowed to play a few "spelling games" to master the words- its more effective for them than one night at home.

Language Arts: I am trying to focus on having a Language Arts block everyday- these are very important skills, you may hear some grumbling about it (it is favored by no one!) however I want the kids to come out of second grade knowing all of their parts of speech and how to formulate sentences that are grammatically correct.

Okay so for upcoming things, put these on your calendar!!

School begins at 12:00 February 19th
Spring Pictures are on February 20th
March 5th the older kids will be reading Dr. Seuss to the elementary kids.
March 7th is going to be our ski trip.
March 24-28th MCT will be here for the play Cinderella

April 25th we will have a Dental & Hygiene assembly

Spring Concert will be May 13th

We have had a fabulous presentation by some amazing singers a few weeks back.
Big Flat Electric did an awesome presentation on electrical safety.

Okay this should have you all caught up and again I apologize and promise to do better!!

Thank You

Mrs. Wills
